Cruisin' - A History Of Rock N' Roll Radio

(5 Sterne; 11 Bewertungen)

The word cruisin' doesn't appear in the dictionary, but it's a familiar word to millions of people who did it. CRUISIN' THE FIFTIES AND SIXTIES, is a year-by-year recreation of pop music radio during the years 1955 through 1970. Each album is not just a collection of the top pop music of a particular year, but a total recreation by a top disk jockey (of that year) doing his original program over a major pop music station. That means actual commercials, promotional jingles, sound effects, newscast simulations and even record hop announcements in addition to the original records themselves. The disk jockeys who appear on the series were picked after a month of carefully researching a decade's issues of BILLBOARD, including tabulating all disk jockey mentions. The names were then cross checked with audience rating services and longtime radio expert Bill Gavin--all this just to determine with jocks on which stations represented each year most accurately. CRUISIN' producer Ron Jacobs monitored thousands of feet of tape, travelled over 10,000 miles and rooted through forgotten files and cluttered basements for old commercials, station promos and jingles. He also managed to get clearances for 84 different records, of which 42 are certified million-sellers, and all are from the Top 30 of their respective years. Once all the material had been collected, weeks were spent in the studio carefully integrating almost 1,000 seperate cues, and timing each year's "radio program" so it could be mastered for tape in four exactly equal parts. This was done to eliminate any dead space on CRUISIN' cassettes and cartridges, making each "rebroadcast" as realistic as possible and similar to the "tracking" effects of records. CRUISIN' was, in fact, originally conceived as a tape project: the first major one in the industry. After all, cruisin' meant cars, and listening to rock stations on the car radio; not until the enormous growth of in-car tape equipment was anyone able to recreate not only the sound of yesterday but the environment where the sound was first heard. Says Jacobs: "The full impact of such originally American social, technological, artistic and economic influences as rock and roll and Top 40 radio may not be fully realized in this century. But regardless of what time will ultimately be required to allow full historic perspective, there is the obligation to preserve the material so the media itself, not just written reviews and descriptions, will exist for future analysis. 1955 Opening Theme (Rock and Roll) -- Buddy Morrow I Got a Woman -- Ray Charles "Jumpin'" George Rock and Roll Jubilee Annie Had a Baby -- Hank Ballard and the Midnighters Teen Jive Talk Sincerely -- Moonglows Melrose Record Shop commercial Hearts of Stone -- Charms Acme Home Remodelers commercial My Babe -- Little Walter "Oh Yeh" Earth Angel -- Penguins KSAN station ID Maybelline -- Chuck Berry "Jumpin'" George Bar-B-Q Pit jingle (from 1953) Only You -- Platters Letter from Korea Ain't It a Shame -- Fats Domino 30th & San Pedro Furniture Warehouse commercial Story Untold -- Nutmegs Rogers Men's Store commercial Bo Diddley -- Bo Diddley Columbus Motors (1955 Dodge) commercial Pledging My Love -- Johnny Ace _____________________________________________ 1956 Robin Seymour Theme -- The Four Lads Roll Over Beethoven -- Chuck Berry Recommended Record Stores Eddie My Love -- The Teen Queens Faygo Root Beer commercial Why Do Fools Fall In Love -- Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers Robin Seymour's Original Rock 'n' Roll Review Tonite Tonite -- The Mello Kings Dog Pound (remote) announcement Fever -- Little Willie John 1956 Ford Commercial -- The Four Lads The Great Pretender -- The Platters (N/L) WKMH station ID WKMH sports headlines -- Van Patrick Tutti Frutti -- Little Richard Sunday Show Promo Stranded in the Jungle -- The Cadets Merchants Green Stamp commercial Speedo -- The Cadillacs WKMH jingle Gee -- The Crows Budweiser® commercial -- The Crew Cuts In the Still of the Night -- The Five Satins Detroit Times commercial Honky Tonk -- Bill Doggett _____________________________________________ 1957 Joe Niagra Theme Susie Q - Dale Hawkins Muntz TV Commercial Happy, Happy Birthday Baby - The Tuneweavers Gelatin-Plus & Rayco Commercial School Days - Chuck Berry WIBG Jingle A Thousand Miles Away - The Heartbeats The WIBG Weather Sound Party Doll - Buddy Knox and the Rhythm Orchids 1957 Ford Commercial Goodnight Sweetheart - The Spaniels WIBG Station I.D. Please help me find other old good music!

Can anyone tell me where I can find the 50 volumes of this? "Tribute to Porky Chedwick". There's a bunch of great music on there, I'd love to hear, too! If someone puts the words "Tribute to Porky Chedwick", in their search box, the first page of that search brings up "someone", who has all the volumes and all the song's listed with them. The volumes are broken up, in different websites, on that first page, and here is the first listing: Tribute To Porky Chedwick Volumes 1 to 26 http://4578oldies.blogspot.com/2014/10/tribute-to-porky-chedwick-volumes-1-to.html I can't comment to this person. It doesn't work, when I try, so I'm assuming the site is dead. And you have to buy a premium subscription to download them, and I hate to put money on it, if it's only going to tell me, the links are dead. I've come here, to at least hear THESE volumes, so thanks for the upload of these! Can't really rate it yet, as I was really anxious to know, if someone can help find the 50 volumes of that tribute to Porky Chedwick.

Terrific collection of 50's and 60's hit radio

I first bought the Cruisin' 1961 vinyl album about 40 years ago as a teen and later picked up the 1966 vinyl featuring Pat O'Day and KJR, the station I grew up listening to and an absolute juggernaut in the day (thanks to Pat O'Day). Supposedly, Joey Reynolds, a top East Coast DJ, was going to recreate 1971 or 1972 for follow-ups but it never came about. Anyway, in recent years, I've bought all 14 years' worth of Cruisin' albums on cassette or CD but they were remixed from the originals because rights to certain songs or something had run out...as a result, the remixes sound far inferior. These tracks on Archive.org ARE the originals. Even though the Cruisin' albums aren't real airchecks from the years depicted, they're still extremely well-done depictions of how things were. As a radio junkie since grade school and having been a DJ for two decades myself, I can't recommend this series highly enough.

Some details on this collection

Ron Jacobs created all of these albums EXCEPT for 1968, 1969 and 1970. In fact Ron absolutely hated those volumes as they were always associated with him, despite their inferior construction. While most all of these are recreations, not all of them are. 1969 and 1970 are both actual air checks, with short intros or endings voiced by the jocks from those years (and another reason Ron Jacobs hated those volumes as he felt actual air checks lacked the proper fidelity or continuity he was targeting) Find out for yourself, listen to any Cruisin album from 1955 to 1967 and you will hear that the time checks and weather reports are consistent. Then check out 1970 and you will notice that the wx reports and reported temperatures change during the course of the recording. Despite those facts having the original unedited Ron Jacobs versions here is awesome!!

I need to listen, but...

Why all the oldies (for that year) on the 1969 program? Couldn't get the rights to The Archies' "Sugar, Sugar" - the number 1 song of the year? I think being available to cut out from the back of some Post cereals probably helped it up the charts. It just seems a waste to use up such a large amount of the available time having songs that would have fit on earlier tapes. Besides the heavier rock sounds of the time, 1969 was also the time of a lot of Bubblegum pop groups like The Ohio Express and the 1910 Fruit Gum Company, plus some other great 1-hit wonders.

I appreciate your efforts to bring back 50's & 60's radio

Thanks so much for bringing back memories of the music that some of the radio stations used to play. Many berate the music of the late 50's & the 60's, but those people don't appreciate how great this stuff really was and is! They actually think today's music is the greatest that there ever was. Believe me, I know they are wrong!

Original Recordings As well!

I have several of the Cruisin' LP's issued/reissued some time ago and it was great to finally find these "albums" again but this time without having to endure many non-original song recordings which were substituted in many instances (I think due to contractual disagreements or something like that) for re-recordings or alternative recordings which kind of spoiled the whole feel of the release(s).

I'd give it 10 stars if I could

What a wonderful treasure trove. I have '58 on cassette (yes, it still plays), and it's so awesome to be able to grab the rest of the series. I only wish one of the classic NY DJs (Cousin Brucie, Harry Harrison, Dan Ingram, et al) announced at least one of these.

Wow, wow, wow!

I can't believe I've just found these! I've got a few on vinyl that I bought second-hand back in the early 70s. I've also bought the CD versions that are good but don't have the radio idents, etc that the vinyl one have. Thank you so much whoever uploaded these!
